The Smith family

Hello all, I've recently been reseaching my family tree and it turns out they come from Mathon. The family name was Smith. I know this is quite a common name, to say the least. The furthest back I have been able to go is 1841 using the census. The name of the couple is William and Elizabeth Smith. They had a son called James. When we get to the 1851 census James has disappeared but they've got 3 more children called William, Eliza and George. Does anybody have any more information on this couple or family?Thank youBen Potter

Hello all, I found this website when trying to find out more about what happened to the William Vale who married Catherine Ridgley. It looks to me as if this is the family who settled in Mathon in the 1830s. I found the following on Google which confirms the link between the Mathon Vales and the Richards Castle Ridgley family:

Calder/ Bennett farmers

I was interested to see that William Calder of Old Country Farm was mentioned in Mathon history. William was the brother of my Great- Great Grandfather Joseph Calder who also lived at Old Country Farm before moving to Slatch Farm Coddington. William's mother was Anne Bennett and I believe it was her brother Thomas who farmed at Southend. Joseph Calder's daughter Emma married my great Grandfather Charles Jones and they settled at The Tanhouse ( Sandpitts) where he began the sand and gravel business.

Hickox family

My grand father was the the youngest son of Ellen Blake ne Hickox, the daughter of Joseph Hickox , Blacksmith from Bosbury and who lived at some time at Horse Hole.

Arthur Harry Blake (my grandfather) married Winnifred May Powell (ne Close) widow of Charles William Powell who was killed in WW1 and is remembered on the memorial.

I gather there were cousins of the Hickox's in the area.
