Mathon War Memorial

We intend to produce a leaflet giving all the information we can find about the men of this village who gave their lives in the 1914 to 18 war. A certain amount has already been gathered from the excellent records which are now available. If anyone can give us more information, will they please contact us? Photographs (which could be copied and returned) would be especially valuable.

Please contact:

I will be going through the archive material I have from Margaret and Harry Norman of Wakelands, Mathon. Charles Powell on the War Memorial was my great Uncle, died in 1st WW. I have photo's of him somewhere and will find them later. I am trying to identify the various old photo's I have and will send you copies with names when I have done this, will take many months I think. I will be in Mathon in April staying with Pat Potter, Charles Powell was her Uncle.

My grandmother Winnifred May Powell ne Close and then Blake

Submitted by Sue Johnson on Sat, 20/03/2010 - 21:52.

Charles Powell was married to my Grandmother , Winnifred May Close.

I was so pleased to see your comment i have often throughout my childhood and in more recent years visited Mathon to put flowers on Billy's grave. I also have photos of their wedding and the War Office letters relating to when your uncle was killed and a photo of my grandmother in mourning with Charles's sister both looking so sorrowful. I visited the church a couple of years ago as i have been to the Remembrance  Service at the Church and visited Charles grave in France.

I do hope you get this before your visit to Mathon or some one informs your cousin of my posting and perhaps we can meet to exchange information or do so via an email.

Regard

Sue Johnson (ne Blake)
